The Cathedral of St John the Baptist in John Street is a good example of a neo-Classical building built between 1750 and 1783. The bell tower was constructed in 1812. The adjacent Bolton Library houses an impressive collection of antiquarian books and rare manuscripts dating from the 12th century.
